Rik Cools kann auf eine tolle Saison 2019 zurückblicken. Er nahm mit einer Mannschaft aus ziemlich jungen Tauben teil, die seine Erwartungen erfüllt haben. Das Einzige, was etwas schwieriger war, war die Tatsache, dass die Einsatztage etwas unerwartet lagen. Dieses Jahr wurde der Reiseplan in Belgien oft überarbeitet. Daher wurden die Tauben manchmal am Montag aufgelassen und er nächste Einsatztag sollte bereits am folgenden Mittwoch stattfinden. Das war für Rik einfach nicht zu bewerkstelligen. Den Tauben muss ausreichend Zeit zur Erholung zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Das zeigt, dass es sich bei Rik um einen Züchter handelt, der viel Respekt für seine gefiederten Freunde übrig hat und nicht nur einem Platz auf dem Siegerpodest hinterherjagt.

Rik, is there anything you'd like to do differently next year?
I will probably darken my old pigeons in the spring so that they keep their plumage and shape longer. The darkening also affects the hormones and thus the shape of the pigeons. I think that should be possible.

Which pigeons are currently your best planes and where do they come from?
The basis still goes back to the old origin, the line "Bliksem x Ema" - "Bliksem x Fryda", the line "Christa" (also a granddaughter of Schone Bliksem). This is the base of my colony and for the past few years I have been exchanging pigeons with my friend Chris De Backer every year, which still pays off. Last year, 2018, Chris won the 1st National Gueret with one of my pigeons against 8,493 year olds and this year my best young bird, the candidate for the podium of the national ace pigeons, comes from Chris.

Rik, which three Röhnfried products could you not do without and why?
Mit Avidress Plus habe ich sehr gute Erfahrung gemacht. Das Produkt senkt den pH-Wert des Trinkwassers und somit das Infektionsrisiko. Die Ergebnisse überzeugen mich. Außerdem gefällt mir auch Blitzform sehr gut. Dieses Produkt versetzt die Tauben in einen Top-Zustand. Es enthält Jod und Eisen und verleiht den Tauben eine schöne rosarote Brust, weiße Nasenwarzen und glänzende Augen. Jod stärkt das Immunsystem und schützt so vor Infektionen. Die Vögel erhalten eine gute Kondition sowie Fettflecken auf ihren Federn. Ein erstklassiges Produkt!
To keep the pigeon's head clean, I use Avisana eye drops before and after the race. Every three to four weeks I put a few Rozitol drops in the pigeon's nose - always at the beginning of the week or after a difficult race. They react very well to this and the drops clean their airways.

What effect do Röhnfried products have on your birds?
As already mentioned, my pigeons are more vital, have pink breast meat and white nipples. So you are helping me to have healthier pigeons.

Rik, what do you think is behind your success?

Ich habe eine gute Grundlage, eine gute Basis. Doch daraus gehe nicht nur gute Tauben hervor, deshalb muss ich vor allem eine gute Auswahl treffen. Man muss einen höheren Standard einhalten und gleichzeitig hart arbeiten und sich gut um seine Tauben kümmern. Vor allem die Winterzeit ist sehr wichtig, denn in dieser Phase bekommen die Tauben ihr neues Gefieder für die folgende Reisesaison. Wenn sich die Tauben über einen langen Zeitraum hinweg guter Gesundheit erfreuen, erhält man leistungsstarke Vögel und kann mit einem guten Team antreten. In der Mauser gebe ich regelmäßig Taubengold in das Trinkwasser und Hessechol übers Futter, das mit Pavifac- Spezialbierhefe getrocknet wird. Ich finde es sehr wichtig, jeden Tag frischen Grit zu verwenden, nämlich Reise-Mineral und Zucht & Mauser mineral. If the pigeons are given fresh every day, the pigeons' digestion remains good, and as soon as they get used to it, they literally wait for it and enjoy every grain.

Rik, how do you prepare your pigeons for an important race?
I adhere to a strict schedule. My team only trains at home twice a day for about three quarters of an hour. When I notice that they are vital and like to exercise, everything is fine. I don't send them on additional training flights during the week. I prefer to respect the pigeon's rhythm with which they feel comfortable.
When feeding, I still adhere to the classic approach.
This means that after competitions they receive good food on arrival in the field, to which I add K + K proteins, then I feed a lighter mixture at the beginning of the week. The closer we get to basketing, I then enrich this feed mixture with many seeds (these contain many oils), peanuts and sunflower seeds. This is how I do the last four meals. I use medication very sparingly, but if the vet prescribes a certain remedy, my pigeons get it too.

What advice would you give to breeders who are not getting good results?
Trust your pigeons. Everyone has more bad than good pigeons, so you have to look for a system that makes good use of the available options. Fly as many flights as possible and select the pigeons based on their results. So you are slowly but surely on the way to success.

Rik, what medical advice do you have left?
Above all, you have to make sure that the team you compete with is in good health. Therefore you should vaccinate your animals accordingly to support the immune system. You should use all the options that are available to you. The boys are always vaccinated against paramyxovirus, smallpox and coli infections.
After moulting, the old pigeons are vaccinated against paramyxovirus and paratyphoid.

Do you want to tell the readers anything else?
Keep an eye out for good pigeons from the neighborhood and try to get some of them because they are your direct competition. These must be birds that fly good results in a wide variety of weather conditions. Test them first in short distance races, because this is where you really get to know pigeon racing. This is done step by step, according to the motto: first go, then learn to walk.
