Endoparasites
I would like to only the types with regard to worms, which occur in these regions. The most common worms when pigeons are nematodes such as roundworm or hair worm, the tapeworm, however, belongs to the Cestodes.
Worm infections are detected again regularly. What strikes me again and again, that is if I am, invited for the first time by a pigeon Association to investigate the pigeons on the spot, that many breeders have a worm infection in your inventory. Especially if the inspection takes place after the season. The mutual infection in the bins is usually the cause. We can often determine the level of performance of a society as a whole can be disappointing. Although more is going on in the Club mostly by the performance. When you realize that you can after a short time drastically to reduce the number of infected blows. The existing worm eggs can however survive longer outside of the shock. Therefore it is always advisable feces regularly perform worm infections.
The roundworm (Ascaridae columbae)
This type of worm infections occur regularly. Shots that are concerned about this can constantly have problems with it. This is inter alia because environment of shock is usually infected with worm, which will be resumed by the pigeons, or the breeder with be worn in, so that the birds can infect again. Serious worm infections, it is reasonable to clean the punches around regularly.
The adult roundworm lives in the small intestine and is about 3-7 cm long. The Ascaris female can lay thousands of eggs. These eggs are not visible without a microscope. The worms have a direct cycle. This means that no intermediate host is required, such as when tapeworms.
After the female has laid the eggs, they are immediately infectious. In a warm and moist environment, these worms are infectious only after 10-14 days. Infection in the bins is only possible in principle, so if these are not properly cleaned and disinfected after the flights. A pigeon absorbs worm freshly laid eggs in the basket, they reached already the intestine, before they are contagious.
A pigeon absorbs infective worm eggs, this get into the pigeon intestine. The roundworms live in the small intestine of the pigeon. The larvae that come out of the eggs, crawling towards lining of the intestinal wall where they settle. In the intestinal wall, the larvae skin several times. These first larval stages are not sensitive to the existing means of the worm. That's why a Vermifuge should always be repeated before these larvae, which were still not sensitive, are grown up and can themselves again to produce eggs. We call the period between infection and the moment when the adult worms can produce eggs myself again, the pre-patent period. This lasts about 30-40 days for roundworms.
Pathogenicity and clinical manifestations
The harmfulness of roundworms is not quite as bad in relation to the disease-causing Symthomen. Nevertheless, we must not underestimate an infection with roundworms. Some roundworms can lower something the condition of pigeons. Because of the pigeon sport has become the Topsport, you can afford to let a worm infection if left untreated. The roundworms eat so to speak with the dove, and absorb a part of the minerals, vitamins and trace elements of the host, this of course also other nutrients. In some cases, it happen that the pigeons worse molt their feathers. In heavier infections, the pigeons lose weight and is suffering from the condition clearly, also the pigeons seem much more quickly fatigued. In addition, diarrhea is possible where the manure is first like porridge. The pigeons are also more receptive to other infections either way.
Sometimes, a pigeon can die even from a heavy worm infection. This can happen when too many worm eggs in the intestine are that a degree of intestinal autritt.
Pigeons, which stuck have more problems with worms. Possibly it has to do not examine his breeding pigeons let the breeder because he goes in season only with the racers to the vet. Pigeons that sit in the aviary, should have always grating floors so that they do not come with the ground in touch. On pigeon loft yourself, you should close corners, seams and column always because just where the risks for a worm infection. As I said also the blow should be burned out in identified worm infection in addition to the treatment of pigeons, so that existing worm eggs will be destroyed. Disinfectant bring not much in a worm infection. To avoid that you blow the worm eggs with the burner itself, it is advisable first to moisten the soil and the columns and then burn.
Cold and unfavourable weather conditions can well tolerated worm eggs. At a damp heat, the development will take place even faster.
There are various means of combating of roundworm infections. An old warning must be repeated here. Febendazole (Panacur) is a medicine that may result in dramatic losses of spring, when it is used during the moulting period. This should then also be avoided!
Other good acting vermifuges are composed on the basis of Levamisole and Febantel. Personally, I prefer the medium on the basis of Flubendazole. Individual treatment works best. Avermectins are also used as Kombinationsmittel against worms as well as ectoparasites. Most of the time, these funds on the basis of ivermectin are manufactured. These funds are still good. There are variant, what an agent has been added and the drops are absorbed well through the skin. These are usually more effective, as drops, which are suitable also injection. Personally I don't advise, because these funds strongly reduce the training of pigeons in the season.
The hair worm (Cappilaria obsignata)
In addition to infections with Cappilaria obsignata also infections with Cappilaria are reported caudinflata. This worm is only 18 mm long and is not noticed in the feces. He lives in the intestine and is much mutilated as the roundworm. A few hair worms are already able, totally undermine the condition of pigeons and destroy the form. As in the roundworm even the eggs of the worm of hair must go through only a strapping, preferably in a moist and warm environment. The eggs are easily identified by microscopic examination. Already the presence of just a few hair worms can lead to the strong weight loss of pigeons, the fitness loss and diarrhea. The performance breaks into this context. In a severe infection it may take long after treatment before the pigeons have built back enough condition and body mass. Excellence is no longer to be expected after a serious hair worm infection on short time.
Cappilaria obsignata has a direct cycle. The worm is not species specific. Chickens and pheasants can be so as a source of infection for the pigeon. Cappilaria caudinflata has no direct cycle. The earthworm is the intermediate host. The hair worm eggs can be infectious after 8-10 days. This is slightly faster than with roundworm eggs. The pre patent period is slightly shorter, namely 21-28 days. Here, a second worm treatment should take place in any case. We don't want that new worms produce eggs already, at the time when the second treatment is performed. Generally, that pigeons should not be treated during the moulting or breeding period. Also, the treatment of pigeons is under wuenscht during the hatchling rearing.
